The Biennale of the 9th Art in the city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is an opportunity to showcase
various prominent artists. For the 8th iteration of this event, the spotlight is on Winsor
McCay.
This American artist, a pioneer of comic strips, is best known for works such as Little
Nemo in Slumberland. After exploring the dark side of dreams and their ability to reveal people's
desires and fears, McCay delves into the fantastical world of dreams. With vibrant colors and more
intricate settings, Little Nemo in Slumberland was ahead of its time.
The poster for the
Biennale blends two highly recognizable styles: Schuiten's in the foreground and McCay's in the
background.
The Art Nouveau movement, a major source of inspiration for McCay, is
highlighted through Schuiten's work. The city where Nemo and Little Imp explore is no longer
anonymous, as it is anchored by Cherbourg's maritime station, a significant landmark.
This art print, offered by Atlantic12, reproduces the poster from the Winsor McCay: Aux
Origines du Comics exhibition. Printed on 250g Artic paper, the format is 50 x 70 cm.
