Description

The publication of Terry and the Pirates, a comic strip created by Milton Caniff and later
continued by George Wunder, began in the New York Daily Times in 1934 and continued until
1973. Caniff's storytelling quality and mastery of chiaroscuro made this series famous, and even
influencing several great European comic artists, including Hugo Pratt.

The story begins
with the arrival of Terry Lee, a young American boy, and his journalist friend, Pat Ryan, in then-
contemporary China. They are in search of a lost gold mine discovered by Terry's grandfather. In
the second strip, they are joined by George Webster Confucius, known as Connie, who becomes
their interpreter and loyal friend. Many colorful characters join them throughout their
adventures.
They often find themselves up against the seductive and formidable pirate queen,
the Dragon Lady. However, once World War II breaks out, she becomes their ally, though only to
serve her own interests and protect her empire.

The Galerie Barbier editions decided to
compile all the strips drawn by Caniff into six volumes, covering his work until 1946. On the
release of the final volume in 2021, they organized an exhibition showcasing tributes created by
several renowned comic and illustration artists, including Pierre-Henry Gomont, Serge Clerc, and
Blutch, which were featured in each volume. This second volume compiles the strips from 1936 to
1938 in a stunning 360-page edition. You will also find a gallery of tributes drawn by various
contemporary comic artists, including André Juillard, Myles Hyman, and Berberian.
