Description

The publication of Terry and the Pirates, a comic strip created by Milton Caniff and later taken
over by George Wunder, in the New York Daily Times began in 1934 and continued until 1973.
Caniff's narrative quality and mastery of chiaroscuro made this series famous, influencing several
prominent European comic artists, including Hugo Pratt.

The story begins with the arrival
of Terry Lee, a young American boy, and his journalist friend, Pat Ryan, in contemporary China.
They are searching for a lost gold mine discovered by Terry's grandfather. By the second strip,
they are joined by George Webster Confucius, known as Connie, who becomes their interpreter
and loyal friend. Other colorful characters join them later on.
They often find themselves up
against the seductive and formidable pirate queen, the Dragon Lady. However, when World War II
breaks out, she becomes their ally, though only to serve her own interests and protect her
empire.
Galerie Barbier editions decided to compile all the strips drawn by Caniff into six
volumes, covering up to 1946. To mark the release of the final volume in 2021, they organized an
exhibition showcasing tributes from several renowned comic and illustration artists, including
Pierre-Henry Gomont, Serge Clerc, and Blutch, which were published in each volume.
This
fifth volume compiles the strips from 1943 to 1944 in a stunning 350-page edition. This tome also
includes a new tribute by Blutch.
