The journey through Les Cités Obscures by Captain Nemo is an idea that started with a
sculptural project commissioned from François Schuiten and Pierre Matter by the city of Amiens
for the 120th anniversary of Jules Verne's death. The Nauti-poulpe, a hybrid creature both organic
and mechanical, makes its appearance in the new installment of Les Cités Obscures, *Le Retour
du Capitaine Nemo*. Fourteen years after the release of the last volume, this new album stands
out for the way in which story and image interact.
After exploring much of the Obscure
World, Captain Nemo and the Nauti-poulpe arrive at the Continent. They navigate calmly between
the buildings of this city and at the top of Neuville Tower. Initially mere observers, Captain Nemo
eventually grows attached to some of the men working in the tower and guides them in his own
way.
Schuiten's passion for architecture is evident in this art print. Buildings emerge from
columns with capitals decorated with leaves reminiscent of Gothic capitals. Every detail adds to
the sense of grandeur that emanates from the image.
This art print, offered by Atlantic12,
is taken from the back cover of Le Retour du Capitaine Nemo. Printed on Modigliani Insize Neve
260g paper in a 50 x 70 cm format, this offset is limited to 400 signed and numbered copies.
