2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the series "Corto Maltese". Casterman Publishing released this special edition in honor of the well-weathered seaman, who originated in Italy in the monthly magazine "Sergeant Kirk", by the hand of Hugo Pratt. Set in 1910 against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, this first maritime adventure originally went by the name of "Una Ballata del Mare Salato" (The Ballad of the Salt Sea). World War I has just begun, and Rastputin, Corto Maltese and the Groovesnore cousins sail from one island to the next, engaging in acts of piracy and experiencing a few surprising encounters with the indigenous population along the way. This comic book marks a new movement in the 9th art: the dawn of modernity and the graphic novel. It was awarded the prize for best foreign publication at Angoulême Festival 1976.
This edition includes:
- Previously unpublished black & white portraits of the protagonists
- Watercolors by Pratt in the preface
Production limited to 5000 copies.
