While Hugo Pratt is primarily known for his famous sailor, Corto Maltese, he also
illustrated several other stories, including that of Jesuit Joe.
This character, torn between his
two cultures, white and Indian, is very unique. In search of his wayward sister, he struggles with
the conflicting identities that inhabit him, indigenous and white, and enforces his own law, whether
it be bloodthirsty or lenient.
This image is from the cover of the album Jesuit Joe et
autres récits. The protagonist, alternately known as Jesuit Joe, Corporal Fox, and Joseph
Montour Riel, is depicted here aboard a canoe. The river gently carries him towards his destiny,
frozen within the pages of the album.
This art print, in a 50 x 40 cm format, is offered by
Christian Colin Editions and is limited to 300 unsigned copies. The print is made on Innova 210g
art paper and comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. You will also find an embossed
stamp in the white margin and the publisher's stamps on the back of the image.
